In this book, I examine contemporary emigration from Latvia to the UK with the purpose of understanding why this phenomenon occurs and what the possible consequences of this trend are, what affects the decisions of Latvian migrants to move to the UK, what their experiences are, and what the links between international migration and the development of the sending states in the context of Latvia are. Migration Systems Theory allowed examining of the migration process on multiple levels. The concepts of remittances, social remittances, and brain drain were combined in a development lens for analyzing the potential consequences of Latvian emigration. The fieldwork was conducted in November 2007 in London. Latvian migrants living in the UK participated in the qualitative in-depth interviews and completed questionnaires. Interviews with the participants revealed several economic, social, and political factors influencing Latvian emigration, allowing for the discussion of the potential consequences of this emigration. This book might be useful for academics, policy makers, as well as for anyone who is interested in the subject matter.

Flooding the Gates or Filling the Gaps?

In 2004 the EU finalised the biggest enlargement round in its history allowing ten new countries to accede at the same time. As it nearly doubled the number of member states at once the enlargement round was heavily debated and politicians expressed fears that it would cause European society to alter dramatically. Since the 2004 enlargement almost exclusively comprised Central and Eastern European countries, people in Western Europe predicted a flood of workers from these countries as a result of the open borders. Still, the extent of labour migration from the eight Central and Eastern European countries, or A8 countries, proved hard to predict while the feared negative impact on the employment rates of natives had yet to be proved. This study has therefore looked at the migration from the A8 countries (Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia) to the Netherlands and the United Kingdom that occurred between May 2004 and May 2011 and the effects it has had on the Dutch and British labour markets.

Latvian War of Independence

The Latvian War of Independence, sometimes called the Latvian War of Liberation (Latvian: Latvijas br v bas c as, literally, the "Struggles for Latvia's freedom," or Latvijas atbr vo anas kar , "War of Latvian Liberation"), was a series of military conflicts in Latvia between 5 December 1918, after the Republic of Latvia proclaimed its independence, and the signing of the Treaty of Riga between the Republic of Latvia and the Russian SFSR on August 11, 1920. The war involved Latvia (its provisional government was supported by Estonia, Poland, and the Western Allies, particularly the United Kingdom) against the Russian SFSR and the Bolsheviks' short-lived Latvian Socialist Soviet Republic. Germany and the United Baltic Duchy added a new level of intrigue, initially being nominally allied to the Nationalist/Allied force, but attempting to jockey for German domination of Latvia. Eventually, the tensions flared up after a German coup against the Latvian government and led to open war. Following a ceasefire, the Germans developed a ploy, nominally dissolving into the West Russian Volunteer Army led by general Pavel Bermont- Avalov.
